“You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.” Spoken by actor and comedian Jim Carrey in a recent commencement address to Maharishi University, this speech is in regards of a battle that each and every one of us will have during our lives. More often than not, what we truly want can be scary to approach. We hide in the safe choice instead. As Carrey points out though, sometimes the safe choice doesn’t work out. Instead of working towards a life you don’t want, take this moment to begin doing what you love. For your own prosperity and career, it has never been more important to focus on what you love.
At the heart of motivation is passion. Passion is the intrinsic force that makes what you do worthwhile. It leaves you feeling fulfilled at the end of the day, even if the day has been rough. Passion is what allows us to explore our world around and to be truly good at our job. It empowers us, and gives purpose to our life. Without passion, going to work seems like a chore. Instead of making your work into something fulfilling, it just becomes a way to get paid. Many people find that for life to have meaning, there must be passion.
Passion also leads directly to purpose. When we are excited about something, we have a direction and drive. We work towards that end with a purpose that other people find remarkable. Whether this is in our job or personal life, purpose gets things done and provides richness to our lives.
Success at work depends on passion and purpose to rise above the crowd. If you truly enjoy what you are doing, then these will come naturally and not require additional motivation on your part. A result of this enthusiasm will be higher income. Because so much of income is tied to work ethic and experience, both passion and purpose will prepare you.
By focusing on what you love, you can take that challenging first step towards your true path, instead of the path that may feel safe. While this can be exceptionally challenging, you should keep Jim Carrey’s quote in mind. If you are going to succeed at something, make sure it is what you are truly passionate about in life.
